Mercedes-AMG Split Bumper Repair After High Kerb Damage

A Mercedes-AMG was brought to Canada Coachworks after the front bumper caught badly on a high kerb, causing the bumper to split around one of its lower sections.

On a performance car such as a Mercedes-AMG, even relatively localised bumper damage can be extremely noticeable. The aggressive styling, sculpted air intakes and contrasting trim mean that cracks, splits and distorted sections can quickly spoil the appearance of the entire front end.

Fortunately, damage like this does not always mean that an expensive replacement bumper is required.

After inspecting the Mercedes at our car body repair workshop in Byfleet, Surrey, our technicians were satisfied that the existing bumper could be professionally repaired and restored.

The Damage

The bumper had caught against a high kerb with enough force to create a significant split in the painted section.

As well as the visible crack, the surrounding area had been distorted and marked by the impact. This meant simply touching in the paint would never have produced an acceptable result.

The damaged section first needed to be returned to its correct shape and the split repaired before any refinishing work could begin.

For a vehicle such as this Mercedes-AMG, getting the contours right is particularly important. The bumper incorporates several sharply defined shapes and transitions, so any distortion remaining after repair would be immediately noticeable.

The transformation

Repairing Rather Than Replacing the Bumper

Replacement is not always the best solution when a bumper becomes cracked or split.

Modern automotive bumpers are manufactured from repairable plastic materials, and when the damage and location allow, an experienced body repair specialist can often restore the original component.

Our team carefully worked on the damaged Mercedes bumper, repairing the split and rebuilding the affected area to restore its original strength and shape.

The surrounding surfaces were then prepared to create a smooth, accurate finish ready for paint.

Repairing the existing bumper helped avoid the unnecessary cost of purchasing a complete replacement Mercedes-AMG bumper while still allowing us to achieve the standard of finish expected on a prestige performance vehicle.

Precision Paintwork and Refinishing

Once the structural bumper repair had been completed, attention turned to the finish.

With brightly coloured paintwork such as this, accurate preparation and refinishing are crucial. Any imperfections in the repair underneath the paint can become very noticeable once the final finish is applied.

The repaired section was carefully prepared before being professionally refinished to match the existing Mercedes paintwork.

The contrasting black sections and the lines around the intake also needed to remain crisp and clean so that the completed repair retained the original AMG appearance.

The Finished Mercedes-AMG Bumper Repair

The transformation from the damaged bumper to the completed repair is dramatic.

Where there had previously been a clearly visible split and distorted corner, the repaired bumper now has smooth, clean lines with no obvious evidence of the previous damage.

The yellow paint finish has been restored beautifully and works seamlessly alongside the contrasting gloss-black trim.

The finished result leaves the Mercedes-AMG looking like new again, without the customer having to replace the complete bumper.
